Null items are perhaps the most iconic of all Skyblock glitch items.
Nulls are made when an item is given a damage value it normally isn't supposed to have. When Minecraft detects the value of this item, it does not know what texture to pair with it, because the block/item is not supposed to exist. Whenever this happens, Minecraft is coded to apply the purple and black null texture to the block. You can tell what the block is with advanced tooltips, turned on with F3 + H.
However, there are a few ways to view the real texture of the block. The first way is to view the textures is to log on Minecraft version 1.13 or higher, where Mojang redid the IDs for the whole game and removed the damage value system; thus Hypixel displays the regular texture of null blocks.
Another way is to place it down. Most nulls can be picked up as nulls, but some can not, making this not the best method. To pick up placed null sponge and null dirt, one needs to use silk touch. To pick up placed null leaves, one need to use shears or silk touch on another tool. One can not pick up place null mushroom or snow.
You can also use the Nulls Reborn texture pack for 1.8.9; an early version of the pack can be downloaded at https://hypixel.net/threads/nulls-reborn-1-8-9-null-texture-pack.3682295/

History
Nulls have been created in many different ways. Those include the day/night saver null method, using the obsidian null method, and fishing up damaged items.
Trivia
Value 14 was obtained using silk touch on a mushroom cap block of the corresponding color in the mushroom desert, and value 15 from a stem block of the corresponding color.
Null snow's damage value corresponds to how many layers it has. Value 1 has two layers, value 2 has three, and so on, ending with value 7 having eight layers.
Null obsidian and haybale are the only blocks that do not have a missing texture in 1.8
